Press Article: Alabama’s Kane Wommack Brings Holiday Cheer to Linebacker Justin Jefferson
In a heartwarming turn of events this Christmas, Alabama football’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack took on the role of Santa Claus by delivering exciting news to linebacker Justin Jefferson. On December 25, 2024, Wommack called Jefferson to announce that he would have the opportunity to return for an additional season — a wish Jefferson had long hoped for.
“I just started crying because I knew what it was,” Jefferson shared on the Crimson Drive podcast. “There wasn’t no doubt in my mind, coming back. Do it one more time.” Jefferson’s eligibility was expected to expire, but a recent court ruling has given a lifeline to former junior college players like him, allowing them to achieve one more season of eligibility. This ruling was catalyzed by Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s lawsuit against the NCAA, which opened doors for players who have competed at non-NCAA schools.
Jefferson, who previously played for Pearl River Community College, had a notable role in the 2024 season, participating in 12 games and starting three. With his return, Alabama solidifies its linebacker corps, also featuring returning player Deontae Lawson and transfer addition Nikhai Hill-Green. Together, these players are expected to strengthen Alabama’s defense, providing a wealth of experience on the field.
“For sure, it was a pretty good Christmas,” Jefferson remarked, encapsulating the joy felt by not just him, but also the Alabama coaching staff and fans. As the 2025 season approaches, Jefferson’s return promises an exciting year for the Crimson Tide.
