In a preview of the 2025 Alabama football season, fans were treated to a glimpse of the three-man quarterback battle during the A-Day practice. Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell all had the opportunity to showcase their skills as they compete to replace Jalen Milroe as the Crimson Tide’s signal-caller.
Simpson, the redshirt junior and longest-tenured member of the quarterback room, appeared solid and in control of the offense during his time on the field. While he had a few inaccurate passes, he looked more consistent than his competitors for the job and did not throw any interceptions during the practice.
Mack, the redshirt sophomore, showed flashes of talent with several nice throws and an impressive completion under pressure. However, he also threw two interceptions, one of which went directly to a cornerback. He seemed to be second on the depth chart behind Simpson.
Russell, the five-star freshman, was clearly the third quarterback in the current order. Despite showing some potential with nice plays and pretty throws, he struggled with turnovers and missed passes. Coach DeBoer highlighted his youth and inexperience in the system as the reason he is currently behind Simpson and Mack.
As the competition continues to unfold leading up to the season opener against Florida State, all three quarterbacks will need to make progress during the summer months to solidify their position as the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide in 2025. Alabama fans can look forward to an exciting battle for the starting role as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
