Memorial Day Weekend to Mark Reopening of Alabama’s Washington County Lake for Anglers
J. Emmett Wood Lake, also known as the Washington County Public Fishing Lake, is set to reopen to anglers this Memorial Day weekend, following its closure last August due to an infestation of giant salvinia. Situated near Millry, Alabama, the 84-acre lake will welcome fishing enthusiasts beginning Saturday, May 4, after concerted efforts by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to combat the invasive plant.
Giant salvinia, a fast-growing fern from Brazil, poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, doubling its coverage in as little as four days. It creates dense mats that block sunlight and oxygen, disrupting local wildlife and recreational activities. The invasive species has plagued Alabama waters since 1999, prompting ADCNR’s proactive measures, including a strategic drawdown of the lake’s water level during winter to dry out and eliminate the weed.
ADCNR reported that while some giant salvinia may still be present, the water level reduction will aid in managing its growth in the future. The lake is home to various fish species, including bream, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass, with catch-and-release regulations implemented for bass.
Anglers are invited to fish from the bank starting this weekend; however, the boat ramp will remain closed until water levels are sufficiently restored for safe boat launching. Updates regarding the ramp’s status will be available on ADCNR’s website and social media channels. For more information, visit www.outdooralabama.com.
As the lake reopens, it promises to provide a rejuvenated experience for local fishing enthusiasts after months of restoration efforts aimed at curbing invasive species.
