Alabama Firefighters Offer Turkey Frying Safety Tips

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — As Thanksgiving approaches, Alabama firefighters are urging residents to prioritize safety while frying their turkeys. Turkey fryers can be hazardous if not handled properly, leading to potential fires and costly damages. The message is clear: enjoy your turkey, but ensure you’re cooking it safely.

Fire safety experts recommend that turkey fryers should be placed at least 10 feet away from any flammable surfaces to mitigate the risk of fire. Improper handling, such as frying a frozen turkey, can lead to dangerous situations, prompting firefighters to emphasize the significance of thawing the turkey completely before frying.

In addition to safe cooking practices, proper disposal of used cooking oil is a major concern. Helen Hays, Jefferson County’s Public Information Officer, cautions against pouring grease down the drain, as it can accumulate over time and cause plumbing issues. "This can lead to expensive home repairs, and if it enters the sewer system, it can be costly for the county,” Hays explained.

To assist residents in responsibly disposing of used cooking oil, Jefferson County Environmental Services offers several recycling locations. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has also compiled a list of recycling centers across the state to help manage this environmental issue.

As families prepare for the holiday season, local first responders remind everyone to fry their turkeys safely and responsibly, ensuring the only thing that’s burnt is the bird itself. For additional resources and recycling locations, residents can visit the respective county’s environmental services websites.

Stay safe this Thanksgiving and enjoy a worry-free turkey frying experience!
