Tragic Death of Foster Child Sparks Investigation in Alabama
Bessemer, AL—An investigation is underway following the tragic death of three-year-old Ke’Torrius Starkes Jr., who died after being left alone in a hot car. The boy was in the care of a contractor from the state’s Department of Human Resources (DHR) after a supervised visit with his father on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the contractor, responsible for transporting Ke’Torrius to a daycare program, left him strapped inside a vehicle with tinted windows on an exceptionally hot day. By 5:30 PM, the Birmingham police responded to a distress call regarding an unresponsive child found at a private residence. Upon arrival, they confirmed the boy had been “accidentally left inside of a vehicle while in the care of a third-party contracted worker,” and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates revealed that the car was turned off, with the doors and windows closed. Preliminary findings indicate that there was “no other competing cause of death.” The DHR stated that the contracted provider has terminated the employee involved, but specific details regarding the child and circumstances remain confidential.
Bessemer’s tragic incident has prompted calls for accountability and reform. State Senator Merika Coleman emphasized the need for answers, noting the importance of reviewing state laws to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a young life, while officials analyze the protocols surrounding child safety and transportation within the DHR framework.
