Alabama Brace for Scorching Heat, Humidity, and Isolated Storms

Heat Advisory Issued as Birmingham Braces for Scorching Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The First Warning Weather Team has declared Saturday as an impact day due to extreme heat, with a Heat Advisory in effect for west central Alabama through 7 p.m. The advisory warns that heat index values could exceed 105 degrees, posing health risks for those not mindful of the intense conditions.

Birmingham experienced a notably rainy June, with precipitation on 14 out of 19 days and a total of 5.61 inches recorded by Thursday afternoon. This wet weather has kept temperatures manageable so far this summer, with rainfall totaling 16.90 inches since May 1. However, a significant weather pattern shift is set to bring hotter conditions this weekend.

While a few scattered storms may occur, many residents will experience dry spells under a strong ridge of high pressure, leading to a shift from wet to oppressively hot weather. Over both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, temperatures are expected to soar into the triple digits across various neighborhoods.

Nightfall will see storm activity diminish as daytime heating wanes. Interestingly, Birmingham’s conditions will be more bearable compared to major cities on the East Coast like New York, Washington, and Charlotte, which could reach near 100 degrees by early next week.

Looking ahead, this weather pattern typically remains consistent during Alabama’s summer months, with little fluctuation in temperatures. Heat advisories may extend into the following week as afternoon heat indices are projected to stay high. Relief could come only from brief, localized thunderstorms that might produce strong winds and heavy rainfall.
