Alabama Big 10 Mayors Call for Internet Sales Tax Reform
Tuscaloosa, AL – In a recent meeting held in Tuscaloosa, the Alabama Big 10 Mayors expressed urgent concerns regarding the state’s "flawed internet sales tax system." This gathering brought together mayors and city officials from various municipalities, who highlighted the adverse effects of the Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) on local budgets.
The mayors pointed out that the current tax structure imposes significant strains on city finances, undermining essential services such as education, law enforcement, and infrastructure maintenance. Moreover, it creates an uneven playing field for local "mom and pop" businesses, disadvantaging them against larger out-of-state corporations selling products online.
"The growing consensus from today’s discussions highlights the need to confront Alabama’s unfair online sales tax structure," stated the Alabama Big 10 Mayors. "As it stands, the system is detrimental not only to municipalities but also to our schools and small businesses. This issue requires immediate attention, whether via judicial action or legislative reform."
Local sales taxes are crucial for funding public services, yet the current system allows online sales to be taxed at significantly lower rates compared to in-person purchases. This disparity means that local businesses suffer from a competitive disadvantage, as online sellers often evade local taxation.
The mayors emphasized that tax revenues are failing to support the communities where purchases occur, with funds instead diverted by state agencies in Montgomery. “For many Alabamians, shopping locally is less cost-effective due to our outdated tax policies. This dual taxation system unjustly favors large out-of-state corporations, such as Amazon and Walmart, over local enterprises that form the backbone of our communities,” they concluded.
The Alabama Big 10 Mayors, representing the state’s ten largest cities, remain committed to exploring constructive solutions to address these pressing challenges.
