Initially reported dead, the university’s athletic department issued a retraction hours later, confirming that Burnett remains alive but in critical condition.
The mix-up originated from information relayed by an immediate family member, prompting the school to inform the A&M community of Burnett’s supposed passing. In a follow-up statement released Wednesday evening, the athletic department expressed regret for disseminating false information but confirmed Burnett’s stable condition after consulting with UAB Hospital representatives.
“We express our immediate regret for disseminating false information,” the statement read. “However, we hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition.” The statement has offered some solace to the community, marking a glimmer of hope during a difficult time.
A crowdfunded support page for Burnett has been established, urging prayers and strength during this challenging ordeal. “Please pray he is having a tough time but we are holding on ’til the very end. God give us strength so we can keep the faith,” the message reads.
Burnett, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined Alabama A&M after starting his collegiate career at Grambling State. In his short stint, he participated in seven games, contributing five tackles, including three against Austin Peay. The Alabama A&M community continues to rally around Burnett and his family as they navigate this unsettling situation.
