Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Allocates $98 Million for Controversial New Warehouse

Alabama ABC Board Plans New Warehouse Amid Calls for Privatization

MONTGOMERY, AL – The Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board is set to unveil a new 250,000-square-foot warehouse on Congressman Dickinson Drive next year, with an estimated cost of $98 million. The facility’s expenses will be funded through ABC’s operating budget over a 20-year span. ABC Chief Operating Officer Neil Graff reassured the Legislative General Fund committee that while short-term contributions may dip, the establishment will significantly boost the General Fund in the long run.

However, critics are voicing their opposition to the government-run liquor monopoly in Alabama, which they argue hinders economic growth. One such critic suggests selling the new building and dismantling the ABC Control Board altogether, claiming that a free market would better serve the state and its economy. Alabama remains one of only 17 states with government control over alcohol sales, a stance viewed as inconsistent with its conservative values.

State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) echoed these sentiments, advocating for the state to exit the liquor retail business. "ABC does contribute several million dollars to the budget as it is today,” Orr noted. “However, it’s crucial to consider the savings from eliminating labor costs, leases, and other expenses."

Opponents stress that while the ABC generates revenue, it ultimately stifles competition and economic growth by restricting private retailers. Even partial privatization of the ABC retail stores could save the state between $25 million and $45 million, they argue.

As the ABC prepares to invest in its new facility, the conversation about privatization continues to gain momentum, suggesting a potential shift in Alabama’s approach to alcohol sales.
