AL-2 candidates prepare for final leg of campaign with substantial funding

The congressional race in Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District is heating up as candidates Caroleene Dobson and Shomari Figures head into the final stretch of their campaigns with significant cash on hand, according to their latest quarterly campaign finance reports. Dobson, the Republican candidate, has $491,765 in cash on hand, while Figures, the Democratic candidate, has $745,215.

This race is shaping up to be the most competitive in Alabama this election cycle as the first test of Alabama’s new congressional district map, which was created to allow Black voters to elect a candidate of their choice. With Republicans trying to maintain their slim majority in the U.S. House, this race is being closely watched.

Dobson has loaned her campaign $1.68 million and spent $840,275 this quarter, while Figures raised nearly $1.07 million in campaign contributions and spent $654,738. Figures’ largest expenditure was $254,374 for digital media advertising.

Both candidates are significantly out-fundraising other congressional campaigns in the state. U.S. Rep. Barry Moore received $113,798 in contributions this quarter, while U.S. Rep. Dale Strong received $133,448.

The voter registration deadline in Alabama is Oct. 21, with the general election scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5. The race for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District is expected to be a close one, with both candidates making their final pushes in the coming weeks.
