Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has offered his condolences to the families of the 62 people on board a Voepass plane that crashed in Vinhedo, near Sao Paulo. While the airline has not confirmed the fate of those on board, President da Silva stated that it appears all passengers are presumed dead. The Brazilian airport authority has not released details of the incident, but images of the flaming wreckage have been shared by news outlet Globo.
The flight, which had 58 passengers and four crew members, was en route to Sao Paulo from Cascavel airport in Parana. Firefighters, military police, and the country’s civil defence authority have been dispatched to the crash site. An investigation and forensics team is also being assembled to identify the victims of the crash.
Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas is traveling to the site, while the air traffic tracker Flightradar24 confirmed that the aircraft was an ATR72-500 built in 2010. This tragic event has left the nation in mourning, with President da Silva expressing his sadness and solidarity with the families and friends of the victims. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
