AHSAA Central Board initiates investigation into transfers at high schools

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has taken a significant step to address the issue of non-compliant transfers in high school athletics. The Central Board of Control has approved the launch of a task force to investigate these transfers after a unanimous vote among its members. A committee including principals, coaches, athletic directors, and superintendents from across Alabama will work alongside AHSAA executive director Heath Harmon to address the issue.

During the meeting, concerns about non-compliant transfers were raised by Mountain Brook football coach Chris Yeager and Alma Bryant coach Bart Sessions. Harmon stated that this issue is a major concern for the association and that the task force aims to address it at both the state and national levels.

Immediate changes include the ratification of Proposal 19, which requires AHSAA schools to identify and mark all athletes who transfer to the school. Proposal 11, which pertains to the out-of-season transfer rule, was also ratified, but the council tabled it for further discussion due to “ambiguous language.”

With the launch of the task force and the approval of these proposals, the AHSAA is taking a proactive approach to regulating transfers in high school athletics. This initiative reflects the association’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and fairness of high school sports in Alabama.
