Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, an Afghan national living in Oklahoma, was charged with conspiring to carry out a terrorist attack on Election Day on behalf of ISIS. He was arrested for attempting to provide material support to the terrorist group and planning a violent attack in the United States. Tawhedi indicated in seized communications that he intended to carry out the attack on Nov. 5 targeting large gatherings, with plans to die a martyr along with a juvenile co-conspirator. He made efforts to liquidate his family’s assets, resettle them abroad, and obtain weapons for the attack. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the Justice Department would continue to combat the threat posed by ISIS and prosecute individuals seeking to terrorize the American people. The case is still developing, and updates will be provided. The reporting on this case was done by Ken Dilanian and Zoë Richards, with contributions from Michael Kosnar and Daniel Barnes.
