Advocate for Cancer Awareness Urges Alabama Senators to Safeguard Research Funding

Activists gathered in Washington D.C. for the annual OVAC lobby day to advocate for increased federal funding for cancer research and prevention. More than 80 cancer advocates urged lawmakers to implement a budget with higher funding for NIH, CDC’s cancer programs, and the National Cancer Institute. The requested funding increases include $51.3 billion for NIH, $7.9 billion for NCI, and $472.4 million for CDC’s cancer programs. Concerns were raised about cuts to NIH funding by the Department of Government Efficiency, including layoffs and caps on indirect costs. Despite challenges, advocates like Emily Abney from Alabama met with senators to push for increased cancer research funding. Senator Katie Britt expressed caution about cutting NIH funding, while Senator Tommy Tuberville criticized NIH grants including one for studying transgender health. Abney stressed the importance of bipartisan support for cancer research funding and the need to prioritize medical advancements in cancer treatment. Although there are uncertainties about the future of NIH funding, advocates remain hopeful that Congress will prioritize funding for cancer research and treatment to save and improve lives.
