Press Release: ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo Team Up for Smart Shipbuilding Innovations
By Nick Blenkey
ABS and South Korea’s HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) have embarked on a groundbreaking joint development project (JDP) aimed at revolutionizing shipyard operations through advanced digital manufacturing and automation technologies. This partnership emphasizes the integration of smart technologies—including artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and enhanced communication systems—into HMD’s shipbuilding processes.
Leveraging ABS’s Guide for Smart Technologies for Shipyards, the collaboration will identify opportunities for operational improvements, focusing on hyper-connectivity, advanced automation, and data-driven intelligence. “Cutting-edge technologies are revolutionizing shipyard production, pushing boundaries and unlocking new possibilities,” stated Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS chairman and CEO. He added that innovations such as augmented reality, AI-based simulation, and digital twins are critical in shaping the future of smart ships and shipbuilding.
HMD’s president and CEO, Hyung Kwang Kim, expressed the ambition for their digital manufacturing initiative to become a global standard, receiving unbiased evaluations from certification bodies. He highlighted the potential for this project to enhance efficiency in construction processes for both shipowners and classification societies.
The JDP outlines opportunities for additional certifications from ABS, including Product Design Assessment and Manufacturing Assessment, contingent upon meeting necessary criteria. This collaboration is expected to yield improved operational procedures and survey processes, benefiting both ABS and HMD.
As ABS continues to support technological advancement in the marine and offshore industries, this partnership with HMD marks a significant step toward a more efficient, innovative future in shipbuilding.
