a lot of work ahead as 3,700 return after Malibu fire, says fire official

Cooler weather in California has helped firefighters gain control over a wildfire that broke out in Malibu, allowing more than 3,000 residents to return home by Thursday. The Franklin Fire, which burned over 4,000 acres and destroyed some homes, was 30% contained by Thursday night. High winds fueled the fire’s aggressive growth earlier in the week. The fire forced evacuations of residents and celebrities like Dick Van Dyke and Cher.

Approximately 1,600 residents were still under evacuation orders on Thursday night, as some roads in the area were reopened for residents to return. Six residential structures were destroyed and one was damaged in the fire. Over 1,700 firefighting personnel and 16 helicopters were assigned to fight the blaze, with efforts including dropping water and fire retardant from planes over the Santa Monica Mountains.

Dick Van Dyke, who turns 99 Friday, recounted his experience evacuating from the fire and how quick-thinking neighbors helped him escape. The fire also destroyed the home of Michelle and Blake Geffen, newlyweds who had recently moved into the area.

Pepperdine University lifted a shelter-in-place order after the campus was threatened by the fire earlier in the week. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and while progress has been made, officials emphasize the importance of continued efforts to ensure the safety of residents and contain the fire completely.
