The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his concern regarding the escalating cross-border attacks along the Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon. The Blue Line, established by the UN in 2000, serves as a “line of withdrawal” rather than a border. Guterres called for an immediate de-escalation to protect both Lebanese and Israeli populations and maintain regional security and stability.
More than 600 UNIFIL peacekeepers, including civilians, military, and police, are carrying out their mission at the Spanish base Miguel de Cervantes in southern Lebanon. Despite living amidst regular clashes between Hezbollah and Israel, the peacekeepers continue to fulfill their duties. Following an incident that injured three peacekeepers earlier this month, UNIFIL reminds all parties of their responsibility to safeguard the Blue Helmets.
The UN continues to provide humanitarian relief in the region, but funding constraints pose a challenge. While recent hostilities have not had a significant humanitarian impact, civilians on both sides of the Blue Line continue to be severely affected by the ongoing conflict. Dujarric urges all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians and infrastructure. As tensions remain high, the UN calls for additional resources to support relief efforts and for all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians in the region.
