Former President Donald Trump praised Miriam Adelson, a wealthy donor and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, stating she got a “better” award compared to the Medal of Honor because recipients of the military honor are often deceased or injured. Trump lauded Adelson’s contributions, including donations to anti-addiction facilities and support for Jewish causes. The Medal of Freedom is considered the highest award for civilians, while the Medal of Honor is the highest military honor for valor in combat. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, have criticized Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz for his military record, with Vance specifically questioning Walz’s decision to retire from the National Guard before a deployment to Iraq. Walz defended his service. The Medal of Freedom was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to honor civilians who have contributed to the interests of the United States, world peace, or significant public or private endeavors. Over 600 civilians have been granted the honor in its more than 60-year history. In contrast, the Medal of Honor, first established in 1861, has had 3,519 recipients, with 60 living recipients today. The requirements for the Medal of Honor include distinguished gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of one’s life above and beyond the call of duty in active combat against a foreign foe. Recipients’ acts of valor must be documented with multiple witnesses and approved by the president.
