Israeli airstrikes targeted a school in central Gaza being used as a shelter on Saturday, resulting in the death of at least 30 people. The strikes were said to be targeting a Hamas command center within the school. Additionally, at least 12 people were killed in other strikes on the same day. The strikes came just before a scheduled meeting of international mediators to discuss a ceasefire in the region.
At the same time, Israel’s military ordered the evacuation of a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza ahead of a planned strike on Khan Younis. This led to concerns about forced displacement among the already vulnerable population in the area. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees expressed difficulties in estimating the number of people affected by the evacuation order, as they were constantly being displaced.
The ongoing conflict in the region began with an assault by Hamas militants in southern Israel on October 7. Since then, the fighting has resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, most of whom were civilians, and the taking of around 250 hostages. Despite efforts by international mediators, the situation remains tense and volatile in Gaza.
The situation highlights the urgent need for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict to prevent further loss of life and displacement of civilians. International pressure is mounting on all parties involved to work towards a sustainable and lasting peace agreement in the region.
