Japanese Americans in Gresham were relocated to the Minidoka internment camp in Idaho during World War II. The Portland Assembly Center housed them temporarily before the move. The new podcast “Voices of Gresham” will share their oral histories. The first six episodes focus on the Japanese American experience in East Multnomah County. Melissa Bevency and Stephanie Vallance conducted extensive research for the podcast, using interviews from the Gresham Historical Society collection. The podcast aims to amplify the voices of marginalized communities in Gresham. The relocation of Japanese Americans is a significant part of Gresham’s history, and “Voices of Gresham” sheds light on this chapter. The podcast features interviews, personal stories, and historical context to paint a comprehensive picture of the Japanese American experience in Gresham. The relocation to internment camps was a dark period in American history, and the podcast aims to educate and inform listeners about this injustice. “Voices of Gresham” offers a platform for these stories to be heard and preserved for future generations. Through oral histories and personal accounts, the podcast aims to honor the resilience and strength of the Japanese American community in Gresham.
