Alabama Priest Under Investigation Amid Sexual Allegations
The Diocese of Birmingham is investigating Robert Sullivan, a 61-year-old priest, following allegations that he engaged in a sexual relationship with Heather Jones, who was 17 at the time. Jones, now 33, claims Sullivan began their affair in 2009 when she was working as a dancer in a club outside Birmingham. According to her, Sullivan, a regular patron, offered her financial support in exchange for what he referred to as "private companionship," which included sexual acts.
Jones has come forward with substantial evidence, including bank records, emails, and a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) allegedly arranged with Sullivan, in which she received $273,000 for her silence. She expressed her concern that Sullivan, who currently serves at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, remained in a position close to families and children. In her statement, she wrote, "Others may be vulnerable to the same type of manipulation and exploitation."
Despite Alabama law permitting consensual sex at the age of 16, the Church considers anyone under 18 a minor, making any sexual contact abusive. Bishop Steven Raica announced that Sullivan has taken a personal leave of absence while the investigation unfolds. The allegations have not met the criteria for a civil investigation by the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which has led to questions about law and church governance.
While the Diocese has reported the incident to civil authorities, Sullivan is prohibited from ministry pending the Church’s internal investigation. A diocese spokesperson reiterated the Church’s commitment to uphold the presumption of innocence. As the situation develops, Sullivan’s absence has prompted the appointment of Kevin Bazzel as the temporary administrator for the parish.
