A newly identified network of over 400 AI-powered bot accounts on X (formerly Twitter) is generating automatic responses to conservative users, primarily praising figures from the Trump administration. This investigation, conducted by Alethea and Clemson University researchers, reveals that these accounts aim to create a partisan echo chamber rather than engaging deeply with users. With the ongoing division within the MAGA movement concerning the Trump administration’s handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related files, the bots’ messaging has become inconsistent, sometimes contradicting themselves wildly in a bid to manipulate perceptions.
These bot accounts were created in batches on three specific days last year and often use irrelevant hashtags and repetitive phrasing while interacting mostly through replies. They exhibit little concern for actual engagement metrics, as their primary purpose appears to be visibility within conservative discourse.
The network has been active since 2024, supporting Trump and other Republican figures leading up to elections. However, they showed some inconsistency by at times expressing admiration for figures like MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. The discord among these bots became especially noticeable following the announcement by Attorney General Pam Bondi that she would not release further Epstein files, which has sparked debate within Trump’s supporter base about accountability and justice.
As a case in point, one bot simultaneously advised a MAGA supporter not to judge Bondi too harshly while urging another user to call for her resignation, underscoring the contradictions in their messaging. The identity of those behind the account network, as well as the specific AI tools used, remains unknown.
