Three inmates involved in a significant escape from New Orleans’ Orleans Justice Center have been recaptured, while two remain at large. Jermaine Donald, 42, facing charges of second-degree murder, and Leo Tate, 31, held on burglary and firearms charges, were apprehended in Texas after their escape on May 16. The Texas Department of Public Safety took the two into custody in Walker County, north of Houston. Meanwhile, Lenton Vanburen, 26, who was in jail for firearms offenses and parole violations, was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The recaptured inmates now face additional charges, although their legal representation status is unclear. The escape has also implicated several individuals, including a maintenance worker at the jail, Sterling Williams, who allegedly assisted in the prisoners’ escape. Williams is accused of cutting off the water supply to a toilet, enabling inmates to remove it without causing flooding. It has been reported that one escapee threatened Williams to gain his cooperation.
After removing the toilet, the inmates reportedly sawed through steel bars and fled through a hole in the wall, ultimately scaling a barbed-wire fence using blankets. In a disturbing detail, authorities found graffiti with phrases such as “To Easy Lol” and “We Innocent” written above the toilet, indicating the inmates’ mocking attitude towards their escape. As the investigation continues, law enforcement remains focused on locating Antoine Massey, the last escapee still at large.
