Sen. Tuberville Pays Tribute to Fallen Alabama Soldiers in Memory of Memorial Day

Sen. Tuberville Honors Fallen Alabama Heroes Ahead of Memorial Day

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) delivered a heartfelt tribute to two fallen Alabama service members, Staff Sergeant Michael Wesley Hosey and Lance Corporal Jason Barfield, during a recent speech on the Senate floor. The recognition comes as the nation prepares to commemorate Memorial Day.

Staff Sgt. Hosey, a graduate of Clay-Chalkville High School, enlisted in the Army at 17. Known for his patriotism and kindness, he would request candy in care packages to share with local children during his deployment. Tragically, he was killed in action on September 17, 2011, just one week shy of his 28th birthday while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. Senator Tuberville described Hosey as someone who always aspired to be a soldier, earning him the affectionate nickname "Merican" from friends and family.

Lance Cpl. Barfield, a talented musician and member of the Ashford High School band, chose to enlist in the Marines over pursuing a college scholarship. He lost his life on October 24, 2011, at the age of 22, while heroically saving the lives of his comrades during a booby trap explosion. Tuberville recounted that Barfield lived with the belief that there is good in everyone, espousing the motto, "Every Day is A Good Day."

In his remarks, Tuberville underscored the essential duty of remembering fallen heroes and announced a resolution to designate May 2025 as “Fallen Heroes Memorial Month.” He emphasized the sacrifices made by Hosey and Barfield, stating, “We will continue to share their stories to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.”

Senator Tuberville represents Alabama in the U.S. Senate and serves on multiple key committees, including Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs.
