Former Lieutenant Governor of Alabama and long-time public servant, George Duncan Hastie McMillan Jr., passed away on April 18, 2025, at the age of 81. Known for his progressive leadership and dedication to the arts, McMillan’s lifelong commitment to public service began with a career in politics and a focus on improving his home state of Alabama.
Born in 1943 in Greenville, Alabama, McMillan earned his education at Auburn University and the University of Virginia School of Law before entering politics. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives and Senate before being elected as the 23rd lieutenant governor of Alabama from 1979 to 1983. During his tenure, he worked to modernize state government, promote economic growth, and revitalize the state’s culture.
Governor Kay Ivey, a longtime friend of McMillan, praised his legacy and mourned his passing, highlighting his great ideas and dedication to public service. After leaving office, McMillan remained active in shaping Alabama’s civic life, founding cultural festivals and organizations dedicated to community development and legal mediation.
McMillan is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, and Governor Ivey ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of McMillan’s contributions to the state. Plans for a public celebration of his life are underway to remember his enduring impact on Alabama.
