Strong winds ignite brush fires in New York

Strong winds in New York on Saturday led to an elevated risk of brush fires erupting in Long Island and near Brooklyn, according to the National Weather Service. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Suffolk County due to the fires in the Pine Barrens. The fires, fueled by gusty winds and dry conditions, have damaged structures and injured at least two people, including a firefighter with second-degree burns. Maria Z. Moore, town supervisor of Southampton, also declared a state of emergency as multiple fires broke out in Westhampton due to weather conditions and beetle infestation.

In Brooklyn, a fire in Gerritsen Beach was under control by early evening, with no reported injuries. Portions of Eastbound Sunrise Highway and South Service Road were closed due to the fires. The region remained under an elevated fire risk through at least 7 p.m., with strong winds and dry conditions expected to continue. Wind advisories were in place, with caution advised in handling potential ignition sources.

The cause of the fires remains unknown, but the New York National Guard and other agencies have responded to assist in containment efforts. Hochul and other officials have expressed their commitment to keeping residents safe in the face of these dangerous conditions.
