Getting personal with a bald eagle: an up close encounter

The Alabama Wildlife Center recently hosted two events for the public to get up close and personal with Shelby, a bald eagle who serves as an education bird at the center. Shelby was rescued after being hit by a car and losing one of her eyes, making her non-releasable due to the injury. The “Lunch with Shelby” event allowed attendees to observe the eagle in her environment, learn about her daily routines, and the efforts to protect and preserve her species. The “Chat with Shelby” event provided a more personal experience, with an informative session led by AWC Education Director Viktoria Partain discussing the importance of eagles in the ecosystem.

During the events, Partain emphasized the dangers that litter and car collisions pose to birds like Shelby. She advised the public to avoid littering, especially decomposable food on roadsides, as it can attract smaller animals which in turn attract birds like eagles. This behavior can lead to dangerous car collisions, resulting in injuries to the birds. Partain urged people to be mindful of their surroundings when driving and to take steps to keep birds safe.

The events provided a unique opportunity for attendees to learn more about bald eagles and the conservation efforts needed to protect these majestic creatures. Stay informed about upcoming events and wildlife conservation issues by downloading the WVTM 13 app.
