MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Blake Strickland, who has served as the executive director of the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners since 2022, has resigned as the board faces increased scrutiny for failing to comply with state laws. Board President Melodie Jones confirmed Strickland’s resignation, expressing gratitude for his service and wishing him well in future endeavors.
The Board of Dental Examiners, responsible for overseeing dental practice in Alabama, has been under fire following a recent audit revealing several instances of noncompliance. These include the unauthorized waiver of fees, procurement of vehicles without proper bidding processes, and inadequate documentation of public meetings. The board’s actions have drawn criticism from several dentists, with Huntsville dentist Sarah Withrow describing it as "predatory" and "secretive" due to its enforcement practices and the lack of livestreamed meetings.
Jones remarked that Strickland’s resignation was not unexpected, stating, "It’s something that the board has been reflecting on." However, she did not provide specific reasons for the resignation, and Strickland did not comment on the matter when approached.
In late August, board members testified before state lawmakers, attributing the compliance issues to a shortage of staff and a challenging rule-making environment. Strickland acknowledged these concerns and indicated that steps would be taken to improve the situation.
Moving forward, the board plans to appoint an interim executive director, with a longer-term replacement expected within 60 to 90 days. "Hopefully it will be as soon as possible," Jones stated, as the board aims to enhance its commitment to public protection and fair regulation of the dental profession.
