Hundreds of mourners gathered in Turkey for the funeral prayers of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who was shot and killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank. The 26-year-old was participating in a demonstration against illegal Israeli settlements when she was fatally shot in the head. Her death sparked international condemnation against Israel, with Turkish President Erdogan promising justice and US President Biden calling for full accountability.
Eygi’s family and supporters gathered in her hometown of Didim for the burial, where she will be laid to rest in the same town as her grandfather and grandmother. Her mother urged Turkish officials to seek justice for her daughter, and Turkey has initiated an investigation, pressing the United Nations for an independent inquiry into her death.
Witnesses, including an Italian activist who was with Eygi in the ambulance, have disputed the Israeli military’s claim that she was shot unintentionally during a response to a riot. It is believed that Eygi was deliberately targeted while participating in a peaceful anti-settlement protest.
Eygi was a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) and had been in the West Bank for only a few days before her death. Her family has called on the United States to conduct an independent investigation, questioning the adequacy of an Israeli probe. The United Nations has confirmed that Eygi was killed during a peaceful protest, further emphasizing the need for accountability and justice in her case.
