Iran has denied allegations from Western countries that it supplied short-range missiles to Russia to use against Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the new sanctions imposed by Britain, France, and Germany “economic terrorism” and promised a proportionate response. The European countries announced the sanctions after the United States accused Iran of supplying weapons to Moscow. The measures include revoking air service deals and imposing restrictions on Iran Air’s ability to fly to Europe. Iran’s denial of selling ballistic missiles was reiterated by a Foreign Ministry spokesman, who criticized the sanctions as baseless and false.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed that Russia had received ballistic missiles from Iran and would likely use them in Ukraine soon. He warned of the threat to European security posed by cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, stating that Russian military personnel had been trained in Iran on using a specific missile. Iran dismissed these reports as propaganda, accusing the US and Western countries of supporting genocide in Gaza with illegal arms.
The statement posted by the Iranian spokesman did not address the US sanctions. Iran is already heavily sanctioned, and some experts believe that additional penalties may harm the country’s middle classes more than its leaders. The situation highlights tensions between Iran and Western countries, with accusations and denials being exchanged regarding weapons transfers and sanctions.
