A public inquiry report on the Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed the lives of 72 people in 2017, has been released, finding that the disaster was a result of “decades of failure” that prioritized profit over safety. Karim Mussilhy, vice chairman of Grenfell United, highlighted how the community was failed before, during, and after the fire by various authorities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized on behalf of the state, acknowledging the failure to protect the victims. The report includes 58 recommendations to overhaul regulations in the construction industry, particularly regarding the use of flammable cladding like the one at Grenfell Tower.
Despite ongoing investigations and potential charges for corporate manslaughter and fraud, families and survivors are frustrated by the delay in prosecutions. They are determined to see justice served and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
