Wisconsin Health Officials Issue Egg Recall Due to Multistate Salmonella Outbreak

Wisconsin health officials have issued a recall of eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms following a salmonella outbreak that has infected 65 people across nine states. In Wisconsin, 42 people have been affected, and the contaminated eggs were distributed in Illinois and Michigan as well. The recall includes all types of eggs sold under the Milo’s Poultry Farms or Tony’s Fresh Market labels.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the outbreak, with 24 hospitalizations reported but no deaths as of now. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting lasting for several days. The Department of Health Services advised those who have purchased the recalled eggs to not eat them, restaurants should not serve them, and to contact a health care provider if symptoms are experienced.

The recall was initiated by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC in response to the outbreak. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had previously announced new measures to limit salmonella in poultry products, including setting thresholds for salmonella levels and testing for specific strains of the bacteria in both turkey and chicken products. The CDC estimates that salmonella causes 1.35 million infections annually, with most cases linked to food consumption and about 420 resulting in death. The Agriculture Department estimates that there are 125,000 chicken-related infections and 43,000 turkey-related infections each year.
