EMILY’s List has announced a $2.2 million investment in attack ads targeting Hogan’s stance on abortion. Democrats in Maryland are leaning on abortion rights to try to overcome Hogan’s personal popularity in the Senate race. Hogan’s campaign emphasizes the women in his family defending his positions on reproductive rights, a tactic used by other Republican candidates.
Hogan, who has been labeled a pro-choice candidate, has faced criticism for his vetoing of legislation that would expand abortion access in Maryland. He faces Democratic Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in the race for Maryland’s Senate seat, with polling showing Alsobrooks slightly ahead but within the margin of error.
Democrats are working to tie Hogan to the broader Republican Party on the issue of abortion. Hogan has pushed back on attacks on his abortion record and vowed to restore Roe v. Wade if elected. Abortion has become a central issue for Democrats since the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. Hogan’s ads are part of his efforts to counter Democrats’ abortion-focused attacks in the campaign.
