Dr. Cristina Cattaneo, an Italian forensic anthropologist, has dedicated her work to identifying the bodies of unknown individuals brought to her autopsy room every night. These individuals, whom she refers to as the “Pure Unknown,” often come from marginalized groups such as the homeless, sex workers, and refugees who have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite the growing number of unidentified bodies, there is a lack of concern for their right to dignity.
In an effort to bring attention to this issue, Dr. Cattaneo has taken her campaign for the identification of these individuals to the European Parliament. She believes that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, deserves to be recognized and identified. A documentary film titled Pure Unknown, directed by Valentina Cicogna and Mattia Colombo, sheds light on Dr. Cattaneo’s work and her fight for the rights of the unidentified.
Through her work, Dr. Cattaneo not only provides closure to the families of these individuals but also highlights the importance of recognizing the humanity of every person, even in death. She strives to give a voice to those who have been forgotten and overlooked by society. By advocating for their right to be identified, Dr. Cattaneo is bringing attention to an often-ignored issue and working towards creating a more compassionate and just society.
