Trump Administration Rescinds $44 Million Grant for Birmingham Biotechnology Hub
WASHINGTON — In a surprising move, the Trump administration has rescinded a $44 million federal grant aimed at supporting the Birmingham Biotechnology Hub, a project that had been widely supported by both political parties and awarded in January before Trump took office.
The grant, provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, was intended to fund innovative projects utilizing artificial intelligence in biotechnology for drug, vaccine, and diagnostic development. These initiatives were designed to enhance diversity in clinical genomic data and trials.
Southern Research, the project’s lead agency in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and other partners, will now be required to recompete for the funding. In a statement, Southern Research expressed its readiness to engage in the reconsideration process.
U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Birmingham, condemned the decision, labeling it “outrageous” given the extensive advocacy that led to the grant’s initial approval. Sewell highlighted the potential of the hub to generate jobs and improve health outcomes, noting that the initiative had garnered strong bipartisan support in Alabama.
Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., reaffirmed her support for the Birmingham hub, recognizing it as a vital investment for both Alabama and national security, especially in light of rising global challenges. She emphasized the strategic importance of Birmingham in enhancing the U.S. biomedical landscape and reducing dependence on foreign supply chains.
The Biden Administration designated Birmingham as one of 31 Regional Innovation and Technology Hubs in 2023, further acknowledging its potential as a leader in biotechnology. Local leaders, including Gov. Kay Ivey and Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, have also voiced their support for the hub’s crucial initiatives.
