Comedian Brittany Furlan and her husband, rocker Tommy Lee, saved their small dog, Neena, from being carried off by a coyote in their Los Angeles home. Security footage shows the coyote snatching the dog near the pool, but Furlan was able to rescue her by climbing the wall and grabbing her from the coyote’s mouth. Furlan expressed shock at the encounter and emphasized the importance of pet safety in Southern California, especially in neighborhoods near the Santa Monica Mountains where coyotes are common. Coyotes typically weigh between 10 to 35 pounds and are known to be attracted to small pets, so it is recommended to not leave them outside unsupervised and bring them inside at night to prevent attacks. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates that there are between 250,000 to 750,000 coyotes in the state, and they have adapted to living alongside humans in many communities. Furlan’s experience serves as a reminder for pet owners to be vigilant and take precautions to protect their animals from wildlife threats like coyotes.
