Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales announced on Monday that Andy Dalton will start at quarterback for the team’s upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders, despite his previous statement that Bryce Young was the team’s quarterback. Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, has struggled in his first two games with the Panthers, completing only 31 of 56 passes for 245 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions.
Young was the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and had a rough rookie season, with a passing-efficiency rating of 73.7 and being sacked a league-high 62 times. Head coach Frank Reich was fired 11 games into Young’s rookie season, and Canales was brought in during the offseason to lead the offensive side of the coaching staff.
After two dismal offensive performances to start the 2024 season, the Panthers have only scored 13 points and gained 352 yards, with a conversion rate of 2-of-22 on third down. Dalton, a seasoned veteran with three Pro Bowl selections and 163 regular-season starts under his belt, will now take over the quarterback duties in hopes of reviving the struggling Panthers offense.
