Veterans from across Alabama and the country gathered in Enterprise on Friday to celebrate the opening of the state’s fifth veterans home, the Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home. Named after Medal of Honor recipient Adkins, the 182,000 square-foot facility will house 200 residents, with applications for residency opening soon.
Funded by the state of Alabama and the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs, the construction of the home was a collaborative effort between the city of Enterprise, the state, and the federal government. The project began in 2018 after a feasibility study showed a need for a fifth veterans home in the Wiregrass region.
During the opening ceremony, emotional speeches were given by Adkins’ son, Keith Adkins, and fellow Medal of Honor recipient Michael Rose. Rose praised the facility as a testament to the state’s care for veterans and their sacrifices, and expressed hope for more homes in the future.
Despite the celebration, the event was overshadowed by controversy within the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, as Commissioner Kent Davis announced his resignation following requests from Gov. Kay Ivey. Issues of mishandling funds and conflict within the agency prompted Davis’ departure, but the focus remained on honoring veterans and providing them with a comfortable and supportive living environment.
With the opening of the Adkins State Veterans Home, Alabama continues to demonstrate its dedication to honoring and caring for those who have served their country. Mayor William Cooper emphasized the importance of sharing the stories of these veterans, ensuring their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.
