The Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s office is currently investigating a series of scammer calls in West Alabama, with the most common scam involving fake calls related to missing jury duty. The scammers impersonate officers and request payment for a citation, causing panic among both younger and older individuals. These calls are coming from spoofing numbers and the scammers often have personal information on the victims, making the scam seem more believable. Sergeant Josh Hastings of the Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s office warns that they will never issue a warrant over the phone, and anyone who suspects they are being scammed should hang up and contact local law enforcement. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is also warning the public about this scam. The increased use of the internet and online databases makes it easier for scammers to gather personal information, so it is important for individuals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls to the authorities. It is crucial for the community to be aware of these scams in order to prevent further victims from falling prey to these deceitful tactics.
