President Joe Biden criticized the Supreme Court decision providing immunity to Donald Trump in his criminal election interference case, calling it a “terrible disservice to the people of this nation.” Biden emphasized the importance of equality before the law and the principle that no one, not even the president, is above the law. He expressed concern that the decision essentially gives the president unlimited power and discussed the need for wisdom and character in the office of the presidency.
Biden lamented the delay in starting a trial before the upcoming election, stating that voters deserve to know the truth about the events of January 6th before casting their votes. He urged the American people to decide if Trump’s actions make him unfit for office and if they want to entrust the presidency to him again.
In response, Trump criticized Biden’s remarks on his social media platform, Truth Social, accusing him of trying to deflect from his own campaign performance. The Supreme Court decision, made by a 6-3 vote, rejected Trump’s claim of broad immunity but allowed certain actions related to his presidential duties to be off-limits to prosecutors. Special counsel Jack Smith has charged Trump with offenses related to overturning the 2020 election, to which Trump pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing.
Despite calls from within his own party to step aside after a disappointing debate performance, Biden has indicated he will continue in the presidential race.
