The Montgomery Advertiser has been recognized with 14 awards from the Alabama Press Association for its outstanding news coverage in 2023. The APA Media Awards, which included entries from 56 publications across the state, saw the Advertiser take home top honors for best spot news story and best spot news photograph. Judges commended the paper’s coverage of a tragic mass shooting at a teen’s birthday party, noting the impact it had on the community.
Photographers Jake Crandall and Mickey Welsh were also recognized with a total of eight awards, including best photo essay for Crandall. The Advertiser’s coverage of topics ranging from aging and caregiving in Alabama to the LGBTQ library book ban were also honored with awards.
The Advertiser’s sister paper, the Tuscaloosa News, also received 14 awards, including overall photo of the year for Gary Cosby Jr.’s emotional capture of the University of Alabama’s women’s wheelchair team celebrating a championship. Cosby was also recognized with individual awards for best news photo, best feature photo, and best sports photo, among others.
The awards were presented during the APA’s summer convention in Orange Beach, where media professionals from across the state gathered to celebrate excellence in journalism. The recognition speaks to the dedication and talent of the reporters and photographers at both the Montgomery Advertiser and the Tuscaloosa News in providing quality news coverage to their communities.
