Former Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon has received a 15-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA after providing insider information about his team to a bettor in Ohio. Bohannon was fired in May 2023 after Ohio and New Jersey halted betting on Alabama baseball games due to suspicious activity. The NCAA found that Bohannon communicated with an individual engaged in sports betting activities and provided insider information about the starting lineup before notifying the opposing team. The bettor attempted to place a $100,000 wager against Alabama, but was limited to $15,000 due to suspicious activity. Bohannon had told his friend that Alabama pitcher Luke Holman wouldn’t pitch in a game against LSU, which they lost.
Bohannon did not cooperate with investigators after being fired, and the show-cause penalty makes it challenging for any prospective employer to hire him without making a case to the NCAA. The NCAA chief hearing officer emphasized the importance of integrity in sports and condemned Bohannon’s unethical behavior. Alabama baseball team has been placed on probation for three years and fined $5,000. Despite his wrongdoings, Bohannon had been Alabama’s coach since 2018 and had a successful career before being fired. The NCAA’s penalty sends a strong message about the consequences of sharing insider information for sports betting purposes, highlighting the need for honesty and sportsmanship in collegiate athletics.
