Relatives and supporters of those abducted in Israel on Oct. 7 gathered for a somber vigil on Saturday following the recovery of Elad Katzir’s body in Gaza. The militant group Islamic Jihad had abducted Katzir, who died in captivity. The news comes on the eve of the six-month anniversary of the war, with thousands expected to protest for the release of the more than 130 hostages still missing.
Esther Buchstab, the mother of another hostage, called on the state to do everything to bring back their loved ones. Antigovernment protesters also demanded the return of hostages and criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. One protester called for his impeachment and new elections.
The death of Katzir has intensified tensions in the country, with families of abductees organizing rallies to pressure the government. Israeli officials are meeting in Cairo to discuss a potential hostage deal, with President Biden pressuring for an immediate cease-fire and the return of hostages.
Noam Peri, the daughter of another hostage, demanded action from the Israeli government, urging them not to return without a deal. The situation remains tense, with families of hostages and protesters continuing to call for the safe return of their loved ones.
