15 Arrested in Ongoing Immigration Crackdown During Traffic Stops in South Alabama

15 Arrested in Alabama Immigration Operation

Fairhope, AL – In a coordinated effort between the Fairhope Police Department and federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), 15 individuals were apprehended in south Alabama on Tuesday as part of a crackdown on undocumented residents.

According to an FBI Mobile report, eight of those arrested had criminal records for non-violent offenses, including drug possession and DUI, along with prior immigration violations. The remaining seven individuals were undocumented but did not have any reported criminal history.

FBI Mobile spokesperson Tommy Loftis indicated that the arrests occurred in the Fairhope area following traffic stops initiated based on "probable cause." This legal standard allows officers to stop individuals for minor infractions, such as failing to use a turn signal or disregarding stop signs.

This operation follows a similar event in Foley just a day prior, where 11 individuals were detained, eight of whom also had criminal backgrounds, including convictions for violent crimes. The recent arrests have raised concerns among advocates and immigrant communities, who fear that the heightened presence of federal agents is targeting individuals based solely on their appearance, effectively criminalizing foreign-born residents.

As law enforcement ramp up their efforts, tensions continue to rise. Community advocates are voicing worries about the impact of such operations on immigrant families and the potential for racial profiling. The increased focus on undocumented individuals in Alabama is part of a broader national trend, provoking discussions about immigration policies and their implications for local communities.
